A new study suggests that 62% of employees in the hospitality, travel, leisure and retail sectors would seriously consider leaving their current job if there was a perceived lack of commitment from their employer to creating a diverse, inclusive and equal workplace.

The Employee Voice survey on diversity, equality and inclusion (DE&I) was conducted by WiTHL and DiR, a collaboration community of member companies that are committed to collectively improving DE&I in their sectors.

The research was carried out ahead of the WiHTL & DiR Inclusion Summit taking place next Tuesday (1st November), where delegates will be the first to hear the findings in person and receive the key results in the annual report. The Inclusion Summit will involve over 20 speakers including Mary Portas, John Amaechi OBE, and representatives from leading brands such as IHG, McDonald’s, Sainsbury’s, ODEON and Selfridges.

The survey’s fundamental aim was to establish how crucial DE&I is to people working across hospitality, travel, leisure and retail. Over 90% of respondents believe that a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce would help their organisation recruit, hire and retain more talented employees, while 96% think that organisations with robust diversity, equity and inclusion strategies, and a strong commitment to progress, are more successful and profitable.

Most conclusively, the survey found that 99% of respondents think that workplaces where diverse colleagues feel welcome and respected are more likely to see an increase in productivity and performance.

Tea Colaianni, Founder and Chair of WiTHL and DiR, commented: “This survey has demonstrated just how important it is to establish a strong diversity framework within the workplace. To see this through the lens of the employees is so important and should serve as encouragement for businesses to continue to invest in robust inclusive practices and policies. At this year’s Inclusion Summit, we will be speaking with leaders from some of the country’s most recognised brands, and shining a light on the impact and real difference that they have made in progressing DE&I within their organisations and the wider industry through the power of collaboration.”
