A step by step guide to talent management

Share with:

Talent management is a broad category of strategies and best practices on how to attract, retain and develop skilled members of staff. The digital staffing platform Couple provides a step by step guide to talent management from the moment the company decides to hire.

Coople first defined talent management as the process of hiring, retaining and training employees with skills that are needed by the company. Coople highlighted the importance of talent management by connecting it to the company’s goals and brand values. If the goals are shared by all employees and the company has strong values that the employees also seek to reflect in their actions, this cohesion will strengthen the company.

Coople identified the key stages of talent management as the following: planning, sourcing, recruiting, onboarding, performance rating and talent development. These last two stages should continue throughout any employee’s time at an organisation. Receiving feedback on performance and being offered further training and professional development opportunities are two powerful ways to motivate and encourage employees.

The stages of talent management:

  1. Planning: Identifying a skill gap in the organisation as well as what the company needs in order to grow.

  2. Sourcing: Opening for applications, building a pool of possible candidates and reaching out directly to talent who have the skills required.

  3. Recruiting: Balancing an efficient hiring process with a suitably in-depth interview stage.

  4. Onboarding: Introducing the new employee to the rest of the team and acclimatising them to their role and to the company culture.

  5. Performance review: A step that will repeat throughout the new employee’s time at the organisation, identifying their strengths as well as areas for future development.

  6. Talent development: Another aspect of talent management that never ends, providing opportunities for professional development through further training or mentorship.
