The future of lighting: The role of behavioural development in effective leadership
By Teresa Beazley, Commercial & Training Manager at The LIA
The Lighting Industry Association (The LIA) stands as the UK’s largest trade association for the lighting sector, driving the industry's progress with a mission to "empower light to illuminate tomorrow." Our commitment to Connect, Support, and Represent is evident in all that we do, especially through our latest initiative: a range of behavioural development courses designed to support the next generation of transformational leaders in the lighting sector.
We face a critical skills shortage, and our industry must rise to meet the challenge this presents, now, and over the next decade. This is not just a matter of technical skills, it extends to the behavioural competencies that underpin effective leadership, which is why The LIA has developed a range of learning programmes.
Building Core Behaviours for Transformational Leadership
At the heart of our offering are nine core behaviours, grouped into three critical areas: Inner-Strength, Values, and Relationships. Each course has been designed to align behavioural development with leadership effectiveness, for example, by enhancing Agile Thinking and Resilience, we lay the groundwork for leaders who can navigate the evolving lighting sector. Emotional Intelligence, another key focus, ensures we have smart, empathetic, and emotionally attuned figureheads to guide their teams.
Our courses in Values emphasise Strategic Vision and Ethical Judgement—vital leadership traits for those who must make tough decisions in an industry where innovation and sustainability are paramount. We also focus on Relationships, offering courses on Effective Networking and Collaboration to ensure that our leaders can build strong, cooperative teams that drive the industry forward.
These foundational behaviours are the first steps toward developing transformational leaders who will inspire and guide organisations through the complexities of the modern lighting landscape.
Unique Learning Experience Tailored to Your Needs
The LIA’s behavioural development courses are designed with flexibility in mind. Delivered through our Online Learning Portal, these courses are accessible anywhere, tailored to fit around your existing personal and professional commitments. This flexibility ensures that no matter where you are in your leadership journey, you can continue to develop the skills needed to lead effectively in the sector.
We encourage all participants to engage fully in the discussion elements of each program, providing an opportunity to network with peers and build a community. In addition, each course comes with a suite of resources and templates, enabling learners to apply their new skills immediately in their professional roles.
