New online Health and Safety Test for Gold and Black SKILLcards
BESA Academy has launched a fully online Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test for Managers and Supervisors, providing a more flexible, accessible way for building services professionals to meet SKILLcard requirements and demonstrate they are competent to work safely on site.
In light of the Building Safety Act and recommendations from the Grenfell Inquiry, it is more important than ever for individuals working on site to clearly demonstrate their competence. The SKILLcard acts as a licence to site, and this test is a key step in evidencing individual competency – forming part of the ‘Golden Thread’ of information that supports building safety and regulatory compliance.
To obtain a gold or black SKILLcard, candidates must pass a recognised health and safety test. BESA’s new option allows this to be completed 100% online, removing the need to attend a test centre, while maintaining high standards through remote proctoring.
“The ability to demonstrate individual competence is no longer optional – it’s a legal and moral obligation,” said Helen Yeulet, Director of Competence and Compliance at BESA. “This test provides a straightforward, accessible way for managers and supervisors to show they meet the standards expected under new legislation and the wider industry drive for safer buildings.”
The test is tailored to those working in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) and covers essential health, safety, and environmental awareness in line with SKILLcard criteria.

- Duration: 45 minutes
- Format: 100% online with secure remote invigilation
- Cost: £24 + VAT
- Requirements: Laptop/PC with webcam, valid ID (passport or driving licence), quiet space
