"Act your wage", the latest workplace TikTok trend
'Acting your wage' is the latest viral trend emerging on TikTok after quiet quitting. According to Gen Zs, 'acting your wage' refers to doing exactly what you're paid to do — not more and not less. TikTok user, Sarai Marie has a number of TikToks explaining how to 'act your wage' - one of which has received over 12 million views. The hashtag #ActYourWage, has amassed a massive 37.6 million views. During a wave of workplace trends discouraging workers from going above and beyond, experts are concerned that the younger generation are missing out on career progression opportunities, and that the mental health of young employees is not being taken seriously. It's also been suggested that a lack of recognition in workforces is encouraging slack behaviour.New research by Wildgoose has uncovered the importance of employee recognition for Gen Z employees, and exactly how they want to receive recognition at work:
-
68% of Gen Z employees (age 18-24) feel they deserve greater recognition for the work they do
-
Gen Z employees are most likely to see their productivity fall as a result of no recognition
-
Gen Z employees are most likely to lose faith in their management team and the company’s core goals as a result of no recognition
-
58% of Gen Z employees favour regular and private in-person appreciation from management as a method of receiving recognition
-
As the most digital-savvy generation, Gen Z are the most likely (21%) to engage with recognition through digital platforms, such as social media or messaging services, compared with just 16.8% of Gen X employees favouring this method
According to Jonny Edser, Director at Wildgoose: "While it’s positive the conversation is being had by the younger generations starting their career, it’s important that companies create a working environment where issues can be raised in a constructive manner to improve employee wellbeing. Companies need to do more to help their employees feel recognised and valued. Harnessing the power of employee recognition helps to increase retention, productivity and happiness within the workforce."
