An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Scottish Prison Service Estates Function for an Area Maintenance Manager for the West area.
The Area Maintenance Manager (AMM) is responsible for providing a high-quality, cost-effective building and engineering maintenance service by the application of technical and managerial expertise for the area worked in.
The role requires strong resource management and planning skills, using effective leadership to engage the workforce. It will ensure that relevant SPS policies and procedures are developed and followed, and that staff and contractors have appropriate training and competencies to undertake maintenance tasks. The post holder will take a lead on planned and reactive maintenance across the estate, as well as contingency planning, risk management, estates asset management, critical backlog maintenance, condition surveys, sustainability and utility management; as well as meeting the requirements of the SPS Estates Maintenance Strategy.
The role provides SPS with leadership and specialist expertise in Estates Maintenance Management to meet current and future demands and will pro-actively manage the delivery of Estate Maintenance Services to the satisfaction of the Head of Asset Management and the relevant Governors (GIC) in Charge and site managers. You will provide a high quality, responsive, professional, support service, ensuring service delivery meets the standards agreed within Service Level Agreements and that the lifespan and availability of Estate assets are maximised to achieve best value for money on behalf of the taxpayer.
The West area currently covers HMP Low Moss, HMP Barlinnie, HMP Dumfries, HMP Greenock, HMP Kilmarnock and CCU Lilias (Community Custody Unit) therefore there will be an expectation to travel across the different sites where required. A full UK driving license would be of advantage, as well as flexibility of attendance to meet the needs of the business, maintenance work and projects. Occasional overnight stays may be required. An SPS vehicle will be provided to support the travel requirements of the role.
Direct reports include two Deputy Area Maintenance Managers and individual site-based Maintenance Managers as required.

Currently the working hours for the role are 37 hours per week however following a recent pay negotiation agreement: “SPS’ contractual full-time equivalent working hours will reduce from 37 to 35 hours without a reduction in pay (effective 1 December 2024).”
On completion of all interviews, a merit order list will be created. Appointments will be made in accordance to merit. Where there are more successful candidates than posts available, a reserve merit order lists may be created and retained for 12 months.
