Post: Building and Facilities Manager
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Responsible for: Facilities Coordinator, Slow Boat Coordinator
Salary Band: £32,000 – £36,000 per annum, depending on experience
Contract: Full time, permanent
Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday with additional work compensated with time off in lieu. On call working rates for emergency and seasonal call-outs
Location: Ikon Gallery, 1 Oozells Square, Birmingham, B1 2HS plus remote and offsite locations as required

Ikon is an internationally acclaimed contemporary art gallery and educational charity. Offering free entry to all, it presents a dynamic programme of exhibitions, commissions, touring and off-site projects. Located in Birmingham, one of the first superdiverse cities in the UK and one of the youngest major cities in Europe, it plays a key role in the cultural life of the West Midlands region.
Ikon’s main galleries welcome around 200,000 visitors every year. Exhibitions feature regional, national and international artists; new commissions; thematic group shows; and projects that bring historical art and heritage in dialogue with contemporary practice. Education programmes include Art at HMP Grendon, funded by Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust, and Slow Boat, home to Ikon Youth Programme, funded by Freelands Foundation. Offsite projects are a key part of Ikon’s artistic programme, most recently Hew Locke’s Foreign Exchange (2022) commissioned as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, and Osman Yousefzada’s Infinity Pattern 1 (2021), in partnership with Selfridges.
In 2024, Ikon is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The leadership team comprises a Chief Executive Officer and two Artistic Directors (Exhibitions and Education). This collaborative structure covers commercial enterprise, exhibition curation and education production, fostering distributed leadership and participation across the organisation.

About the role
The post holder will be responsible for managing Ikon's main building, temporary premises and canal narrowboat (Slow Boat). They will manage a mixture of hard and soft facilities management services and projects and manage tenant service charges. They will be responsible for ensuring any building project works and fit outs are co-ordinated and well managed ensuring full compliance with health and safety legislation.
The post holder will also be responsible for managing all the required property support services to ensure that Ikon fulfils its obligations and organisational priorities; ensuring the premises are fit for purpose; ensuring the provision is safe and legally compliant; managing security; ensuring damage is repaired; managing lifecycle maintenance; energy management; financial management; and supporting on wider project workstreams.
